Interior Design Fees in India: What It Actually Costs (2026)
By Sattva Design
If you've started researching an interior design project, you've probably noticed that nobody publishes a straight price. That's not evasion — it's because fees genuinely depend on the scope of work, your city, the size of the space and the finishes you choose. This guide explains how interior designers in India charge so you can read a quote properly and budget with confidence.
How interior designers charge
There is no single industry-wide rate. Most designers use one of four common models — and many combine them.
- Consultation fee — a one-time or hourly charge for advice, a site visit, layout ideas and material direction. Useful if you want professional input but plan to execute the work yourself.
- Per square foot — a rate multiplied by the area being designed. Simple to compare, but only meaningful when you know what level of finish that rate assumes.
- Percentage of project cost — the fee is a share of the total execution budget. Common on larger or turnkey projects where the designer manages procurement and contractors.
- Flat (lump-sum) fee — a fixed amount for a clearly defined scope. Predictable, provided the scope is documented in detail.
None of these is inherently cheaper. A low per-sq-ft rate with a thin scope can cost more in the end than an all-inclusive fee, once add-ons and revisions pile up.
What's usually included — and what isn't
The single most important question to ask any designer is what does this fee cover? Design fees and the cost of actually executing the work are two different things, and confusing them is the most common reason budgets feel like they've doubled.
A design fee typically covers some combination of:
- Space planning and layout
- Concept, mood boards and 3D visualisations
- Material, finish and colour selection
- Working drawings for carpenters, electricians and other trades
- Site visits and design supervision
What usually sits outside the design fee: the furniture, false ceiling, flooring, modular kitchen, wardrobes, lighting, painting and labour — in other words, the actual build. Always confirm whether a quote is design-only, supply-and-install, or full turnkey.
What drives the cost up or down
Two projects of the same size can differ widely in cost. The main levers are:
- Scope — full home versus a single room; design-only versus turnkey execution.
- Finishes and materials — laminate versus veneer, standard versus imported tiles, off-the-shelf versus custom joinery.
- Customisation — bespoke furniture and detailing cost more than modular or ready solutions.
- Site condition — a fresh space is simpler than one needing demolition or rework.
- City and availability — labour and material rates vary across India and even between towns.
- Timeline — compressed schedules and frequent design changes both add cost.
The biggest avoidable expense is changing your mind mid-execution. A resolved design and a detailed project estimate before work begins is the cheapest insurance you can buy.
Residential vs commercial
Homes and commercial spaces are priced differently because the work is different. Residential projects lean heavily on personalisation, storage and comfort. Commercial spaces — offices, retail, clinics, restaurants — carry extra demands: branding, footfall and durability, compliance and safety norms, and often a faster turnaround. Commercial scopes frequently use the percentage-of-project model because procurement and coordination are a larger part of the job.
How to budget realistically
- Decide your total budget first, and keep a 10–15% contingency.
- Split that budget mentally into design fee and execution cost — they are separate.
- Ask for an itemised scope, so you know exactly what the fee includes.
- Get a detailed estimate tied to an actual design, not a generic per-sq-ft figure.
- Lock material specifications before work starts to avoid mid-project changes.
If your interior is part of a new build, it's worth coordinating it with your custom home design from day one — planning storage, lighting and finishes early avoids expensive rework later. You can see the full range of what we offer on our services page.
